Impeachment is all but certain

By: TDF Staff

House Democrats have now passed the majority number of 218 members favoring impeachment or an impeachment inquiry. So it was obviously time for a flurry of news stories interviewing mostly Trump supporters on how impeachment could backfire (Democrats are “nervous,” Republicans are “dug in”). This sampling is from The New York Times:

In interviews with voters on Wednesday, there was no clear or surprising shift in sentiment on impeachment; some Republican voters pumped their fists with bring-it-on energy, and some Democrats pronounced themselves vindicated but also uncertain about whether the House — let alone the Republican-led Senate — would ultimately act against Mr. Trump.

Of course there isn’t going to be a change in attitudes, and certainly not in one day. It took months of televised hearings about Watergate before public opinion swung against Richard Nixon, finally forcing him to resign—that, and a U.S. Supreme Court ruling ordering the full release of the Nixon tapes.

But while Nixon felt at least a modicum of shame, Trump obviously doesn’t. He’ll never resign as long as his family is still making money off his office and he can use the institution of the presidency to feed his enormous ego.

There was no Fox News or right-wing hate radio in the 1970s, and no social media to spread right-wing conspiracy theories. There were enough Republicans in the 1970s who were finally willing to put country before party and say out loud that Nixon’s behavior was illegal and that he should be held accountable.

Today, not so much. Republican lawmakers are too afraid of Trump’s voting base and of possible Trump-loving primary challengers to stand up to him.

There are an assload of reasons to impeach Donald Trump: obstruction of justice in the Robert Mueller Russia investigation, profiting off the presidency, violation of the Constitution’s emoluments clause, stonewalling congressional investigations, blocking congressional subpoenas, and refusing to let anyone connected to the White House testify before Congress, just to name a few. His obvious approach to smear a 2020 opponent is only the latest.

How will all of this play out in the long run? So much depends on how it plays in the media, how Trump continues to play the victim card, and how members of both parties spin the information.

Trump’s lemmings will be dug-in no matter what. Now, more than ever, it’s important to register new Democratic voters and make sure that those voters get to the polls. And vote.

NRA found to have acted as ‘foreign asset’ for Russia

By: TDF Staff

Maria Butina

The National Rifle Association was a “foreign asset” for Russia during the 2016 election, an 18-month investigation by Senate Finance Committee Democrats finds. The NRA sought, with much enthusiasm, to help Maria Butina and Alexander Torshin insinuate themselves into right-wing circles on behalf of Russia, and NRA officials knew that Butina and Torshin were linked to the Russian government. Butina emailed NRA officials that the 2015 Moscow visit by some NRA leaders was important because “many powerful figures in the Kremlin are counting on Torshin to prove his American connections.”

The report finds that when Butina asked about which U.S. politicians she would be able to meet at NRA events, NRA staff provided her with a list, and “NRA resources appear to have been used to pay for membership and registration fees to third party events for [Torshin and Butina] as well as to arrange for transit to and lodging for many of those events throughout 2015 and 2016.”

South Carolina Senator With Cream Soup Spine Has Completely Different View on Impeachment Compared to 20 Years Ago

More spineless than Paul Ryan ever was… Sen. Graham

Lindsey Graham. The man South Carolina voters duly reelect while the rest of the nation wonders how he still has a job. Let’s take a trip to 1999, when Graham, then a 43-year-old member of the House with just six years’ experience in sowing division, took the floor to wax poetic about what impeachment is and when it applies.

The 1999 version of Lindsey Graham sought to take down a Democrat, President Bill Clinton; now that Donald Trump is in office, Graham’s hypocrisy has been ramped up far beyond threat level midnight. The senator’s spine has been the consistency of cream-based soup ever since he got on the Trump Train.

Transcript time!

REP. LINDSEY GRAHAM: So the point I’m trying to make is (this): You don’t even have to be convicted of a crime to lose your job in this constitutional republic, if this body determines that your conduct as a public official is clearly out of bounds in your role. […]

… because impeachment is not about punishment. Impeachment is about cleansing the office. Impeachment is about restoring honor and integrity to the office.

1999’s Lindsey Graham also had strong opinions on what constitutes a crime, according to an appearance on Meet the Press.

Transcript time!

REP. LINDSEY GRAHAM: He (Clinton) doesn’t have to say, “Go lie for me,” (for it) to be a crime. You don’t have to say, “Let’s obstruct justice” for it to be a crime. You judge people on their conduct, not magic phrases.

If we are judging Donald Trump on his conduct then Graham must surely want to “cleanse” the Oval Office, right!?

Unfortunately, when it comes to Trump’s hardcore converts that used to be critics, the Graham is a textbook unapologetic hypocrite.

Thus, on Wednesday he taunted the House and boldly stated that the movement to impeach is just fueled by hatred for Trump.

He’s wrong, and it’s clear that he will never, ever place country over party—even when that party has become the party of Trump.

Petulant child turns “Infrastructure Week” into a publicity stunt

By: TDF Staff

Infrastructure Week was cut short today by Donald Trump after 4 minutes. Donald Trump walked out of his meeting with Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi and headed for the Rose Garden with pre-printed “Mueller probe by the numbers” fact sheets and charts.

“I want to do infrastructure,” Trump claimed, “but you know what, you can’t do it under these circumstances. So get these phony investigations over with,” he commanded.

Shortly after the petulant child that was somehow voted in to office finished his newest unhinged tirade, Pelosi and Schumer held their own press conference, in which they admitted that they were ambushed by Trump.

“We had hoped that we could give this president the opportunity to have a signature infrastructure initiative,” Pelosi said, “For some reason — maybe a lack of confidence on his part that he couldn’t match the greatness of the challenge before him — … he just took a pass.”

Today’s showboating is further proof that Trump is running scared. Now that his arguments are losing in court and his taxes and desperate financial situation, along with possible criminal activity, might be revealed for all to see.

Fox News follows up Buttigieg town hall by smearing him

Fox & Friends hosts have meltdown over applause given to a Democrat on a Fox News broadcast

By: TDF Editorial

Following last evening’s Fox News town hall with Pete Buttigieg, any potentially open mind of a run of the mill Fox News viewer is being slammed shut today by a parade of Fox News miscreants. They roll out the red carpet to gain credibility with skittish advertisers, and Democrats pretend they don’t understand the broader Fox News mission. Then the smearing begins after all is said and done.

Want examples of that smearing? Here is a taste:

Fox & Friends, the Fox morning show beloved by President Donald Trump, devoted significant time on Monday to undermining Buttigieg’s presentation.

Buttigieg is a veteran of the war in Afghanistan; co-host Brian Kilmeade presented him as trying to undermine American patriotism, calling him a “clown” who wants to “erase our country’s history” for arguing that the Democratic Party’s Jefferson-Jackson dinners should be renamed for people who didn’t own slaves.

The candidate received a warm response from the town hall attendees; Kilmeade bizarrely claimed the crowd was enthusiastic only because it was stacked with his friends and relatives.

Buttigieg is a gifted communicator; the program sliced and diced his town hall answers into a clip reel of disjointed quotes which the co-hosts warned prove he is a “very progressive” radical. “He had some interesting comments last night, sounds like a nice guy, but do you agree with his policies?” co-host Ainsley Earhardt said at one point before rattling off a misinformation-laden litany of Buttigieg’s purported positions

Even the most gifted political salesman doesn’t stand a chance on Fox. Sure, they might hand over a block of programming on a Sunday night, in a ploy to dupe advertisers into thinking Fox News can’t possibly be that toxic if “even Democrats” decide to appear.

Please, Democrats… Stop wasting your time on Fox News. Don’t fall into the trap any more.

Open Thread: The Continuing Constitutional Crisis

By: TDF Editorial

05/14/2019 2:00pm

President Donald J. Trump has been and continues to be a walking, talking constitutional crisis.

05/14/2019 4:05pm

Trump delivered a full-length campaign-style speech to a group of energy workers in Louisiana this afternoon. Seems kind of unethical to do such a thing at what is not a political event.

05/15/2019 2:54pm

Trump blasted the “fake news media” in a tweet 45 mins ago. This time regarding the chatter that there is infighting within his administration regarding his policy towards Iran. He of course denies there is. Shocker.

Children of LGBT U.S. citizens may be stripped of their birthright citizenship due to an administration policy that de-recognizes their parents’ marriage

President Trump is again wading into dangerous waters with more “conspiracy” talk.

Marco Rubio defending himself again against claims he used to have principles

By: TDF Staff

Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio, like so many other Republicans with high ambitions, spends the majority of his days blurting our to any microphone in range of his lofty principles and ideals. Never does it ever amount to much of anything. What he says typically is contradictory to his own prior legislative votes and activities. He always ends up solidifying the view that he is a shell of the person he tried to make himself look like during that train-wreck of a presidential campaign he had a few years back.

Senator Rubio is now at it again in the wake of the push to hold William Barr in contempt for lying during his appearance last week in front of Congress. Back when the president was Barack Obama and the scandal du jour was something called Fast and Furious, Rubio seemed principled.

“I think it is outrageous that any attorney general, Republican or Democrat, refused to comply with Congress’ constitutional right to hold them accountable and the Justice Department accountable. I would say that if this was a Republican.”

JUST KIDDING!! He would not say that if this was a Republican.

When the drums stated pounding last week and Dems started calling to hold Barr in contempt for his lies, Rubio responded on Twitter by making it clear that, when he was faking principles in 2012, he was only talking about a certain kind of contempt of Congress, and a certain version of Congress’s constitutional right, and a certain subset of “accountable.”

“If like Eric Holder William Barr ever authorizes a program like #FastandFurious that gives drug dealers guns subsequently used to kill a U.S. agent, lies about it & then refuses to provide Congress information, he should resign.”

Ah, ok. It was a non-transferable deal. Only valid while Barack Obama was President. Ok, Marco. Now, please stop talking in public for a while. Be spineless in the privacy of your own home.

Seriously, Florida. Stop voting for this guy.

AOC calls out Rick Scott and it was amazing

By: TDF Staff

As is the standard with most right-wing members of Congress, there is an obsession with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez that is almost at unhealthy levels. Today we learned what was already assumed, Senator Rick Scott of Florida, the Lex Luther of US Politicians, has got a case of the AOCs and the trolling finally caused him to get owned by her.

On Monday, Scott tried to come for Ocasio-Cortez and her Green New Deal again on Twitter. Scott was initially attacking New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker’s plan to combat the nation’s rampant gun violence with a national gun licensing program, which is a tad ironic because some of the most high-profile mass shootings in history occurred under Scott’s watch in Florida.

Scott then went on to slam Ocasio-Cortez, asking if she would “make us register every time we buy meat” if the Green New Deal passes.

While the snide “meat registration” comment is right in line with the things that get the right wing based revved up, AOC was quick to let him know she wasn’t having any of it:
